Thabi Mthethwa
Hi, I’m Thabi Mthethwa, Dr Maharaj’s patient ,A year ago, out of the blue I felt a lightninglike pain on the leg. This spread to both legs and later to other parts of the body which made it difficult to walk. To cut a long story short, I was diagnosed with 2 big brain tumours. And out of fear, it took me about 11 months to have the courage to do the surgery. Prior to that, Dr Maharaj sat me, and my family down explaining the procedure and reassured me that everything will go well. I did the surgery, and not only did it go smoothly but my recovery was quick. I thank God for the miracle HE performed in my life through this doctor, and I learned that you may have money or medical aid to do it but without a passionate expert, it’s impossible. I will forever be grateful for his continuous support throughout this journey. God bless Him.

Dr Maharaj and his team are phenomenal. I’ve seen my fair share of specialists in my lifetime and none compare to his practice. He is very professional, kind and caring. I didn’t feel like just another patient but a person. I had quite a complicated revision back operation that needed to be done. He never did my first operation but took the challenge on and explained how everything was going to go. The procedure, the post operation information and one’s expectations. He did scans and investigation to figure out why my first surgery wasn’t successful before he would even consider operating on me which I thought was fantastic. He is a very understanding and kind Doctor who I have recommended to everyone I know. I wish I had known about him years ago. I live in Howick and tell people here that it is worth the drive to Entabeni hospital to see him. You won’t look back after seeing him. He takes his time, and you never feel rushed in his consultations. Thank you, Dr Maharaj and your fantastic team, for all you have done for me. Keep up the fantastic work.

A year ago, I suffered with excruciating pain on my left side running from my buttocks to the bottom of my ankle. However, this restricted my mobility.I got an appointment with Dr Prashanth Maharaj. The MRI scan and X-ray confirmed it was a sciatic nerve.I had to undergo a Lumbar Microdisectomy, I was booked in for surgery on 21 October 2021. At this stage I was very nervous and stressed. Dr Maharaj explained the procedure in detail and instilled the confidence in me, which made me feel relaxed and at ease. And his reassurance that I was going to back to how I was prior to taking ill.I was admitted and the operation was a success. The 3 days I spent in hospital I was visited twice daily by him and was given the utmost care. From my first consultation and until after the post operation your professionalism, knowledge, commitment and friendliness were outstanding. Thank you, DR Prashanth Maharaj you are, the best Neurosurgeon I will highly recommend you for your professionalism.May you always be blessed. And a special thank you to Andrea and Rochelle at your rooms for making every visit of mine welcome and pleasant. Rehana Kayalsum.

On the 29th of Feb 2020 Dr Prashanth Maharaj was the treating specialist who had been called in with relation to my dad’s injury. My dad had suffered a freak accident at home which resulted in severe trauma to the brain (subdural hematoma). He was left with a 17% chance of survival due to the internal damage incurred. Our lives had changed forever that night. I remember Dr Maharaj saying to us that 17% chance is better than no chance at all. I remember telling him to please try his very best, "thats my father, we love him so much." He performed a miracle operation on my dad. In my opinion others would have given up due to the life expectancy. We faced adversity after adversity due to the following complications that followed. A stroke, pneumonia, being ventilated for 2-3 months. Dr Maharaj handled our emotions so respectfully after he told us blow by blow the worst yet honest possible outcomes. His offices kept us informed on daily progresses. They were always so tolerant with our numerous phone calls made. He is a man of principle. Here we are almost 3 years later, my dad not being 100% but he is alive and progressing. Thank you can never be enough for all that you have done and continue to do. By being a Neurosurgeon of note and doing the very best that you can do. Sometimes as patients we forget that you guys have lives of your own. Always putting it on hold and giving your profession 100% continuously. Thank you to the practice staff for always understanding and assisting to the best or their ability. May you always be blessed in all that your practice sets out to achieve. God Bless. Jonty Dhabicharan (Daughter)

After a bad fall I had kyphoplasty surgery with Dr Maharaj in January 2022. This procedure is where special cement is injected into the vertebrae. I was impressed by Doctor Maharaj’s approach and manner from my initial consult with him up to and including my post operative care. He took the time to explain in detail the process and answer all my questions and address my concerns. I am now totally pain free for the first time in twenty years and would not hesitate to recommend Dr Maharaj’s services to anyone with back issues. Jane Cross

I would like to share my treatment journey that I have experienced with DR. P. Maharaj. He was recommended to me by my local GP. My first visit to DR. Maharaj was on the 10th of May 2022. I found him very polite and friendly, He spoke to me and asked me questions he took his time listening to me. He said I needed to have an MRI, and this was booked for me. I had the MRI ON THE 16TH of May 2022 at Life Entabeni hospital. Dr Maharaj came to give me the results, I had a brain tumour measuring 35 mm x 30 mm. The way he told me, it did not upset me, I felt comfortable listening to him. He told me to come and see him in his rooms and bring a family member with. I went to see him with my daughter, and he went into detail how the tumour would be removed, how long I would be in ICU, how long I would be in hospital and the recovery when I was at home. My daughter and I had a list of questions which he answered in detail.I had the operation on the 29th of June 2022, I did feel very worried before I had the operation, but Dr Maharaj reassured me that I would be fine. After the operation I woke up in ICU, Dr Maharaj said he removed all the tumour in 3 pieces, it would be sent away to be checked if it was malignant or benign. Dr Maharaj visited me every day in hospital to see how I was recovering. After a few days he said he had good news for me, that was the tests were back and the tumour was non-cancerous, I was so happy. My recovery in hospital was very quick, I did not stay in as long as what was expected. MY CONCLUSION :This soft spoken, extremely kind and caring Specialist Neurosurgeon DR PRASHANTH MAHARAJ needs to be recognized by all his patients for being so dedicated in helping sick and injured people recover. Thank you so much for helping me. Carolyn Stalley

I was referred to Dr. Maharaj during my hospital admission, and I will always be grateful for this referral. After consulting with him, it was clear that I needed spinal fusion surgery. Dr. Maharaj thoroughly explained everything—from the cause of my issue to the procedure itself, as well as the pre- and post-operative care. My husband and I felt completely reassured and at ease, knowing we understood every aspect of the process. The surgery, performed on July 23, 2024, was a complete success, and after 25 years of pain, I am now pain-free. Dr. Maharaj provided outstanding care both before and after the surgery. He is not only highly skilled and professional but also compassionate. I wholeheartedly recommend him. His staff was equally wonderful—always kind, helpful, very compassionate and ready to assist Thank you, Dr. Maharaj, from the bottom of our hearts. Shareen Naipaal

Dr Prashanth Maharaj is highly professional,, he explained to me in detail my current back problem and his plan of treatment. He doesn't rush with his consults and makes you feel comfortable which gives you a positive feeling. He has an amazing staff who are very helpful and especially Andrea who went out of her way to ensure that medical authorisations were approved. Dr Maharaj is focussed more on conservative treatment and operation is his last resort. I would highly recommend Doctor Maharaj. Anonymous Via Rate MD

Dr Maharaj saved my husbands life in February 2020. My husband had been in motorcycle accident and trauma doctor had discharged him saying there’s nothing wrong with him until Dr Maharaj came in to check on his xrays and figured that something was seriously wrong. He requested an Mri be done and saw that his C6 was broken and suffered severe nerve damage and serious spinal shock. He and his team worked efficiently to prepare my husband for an emergency operation and advised me through the process and was very supportive during the stay in hospital and even when he was moved to rehab and at home. We know God is a miracle worker but God used the hands and brains of Dr Maharaj and saved my husbands life today. If we had just listened to the trauma Dr and taken my husband home then he would have been paralyzed today. Forever grateful to Dr Maharaj. God bless you Anonymous Via Rate MD
